In One’s Own Light: Documenting the Lives and Cultures of Third Gender Communities

"In One’s Own Light" is an ambitious and heartfelt project dedicated to documenting and illuminating the lives, cultures, and struggles of third gender communities around the world. By capturing their stories and photographs, we aim to create a compelling book that serves as a testament to their resilience and humanity. Our belief is that knowledge fosters comprehension, which in turn nurtures acceptance and harmony.

Our initial focus is on the Hijra community in India, whose rich history and unique cultural significance provide a profound starting point for our journey. However, "In One’s Own Light" is envisioned as a global endeavor that transcends geographical boundaries. We are committed to exploring and presenting the diverse experiences of third gender communities worldwide.

Our project will feature significant transgender communities, such as the Sworn Virgins of Albania, who challenge traditional gender roles in their society; the Two-Spirit people of Indigenous North America, whose existence and roles are deeply intertwined with their cultural and spiritual traditions; the Kathoey of Thailand, who navigate a complex social landscape with grace and resilience; and the Muxes of Mexico, whose identity and traditions offer a unique perspective on gender diversity.

These are just a few examples of the many transgender communities around the world, each with its own unique culture and history. By collaborating with NGOs, activists, and community leaders worldwide, we aim to gain access to these diverse third gender communities, immerse ourselves in their lives, and accurately represent their stories.

Through the lens of our cameras and the depth of their narratives, we seek to shed light on the beauty, strength, and humanity of these often marginalized communities. Our ultimate goal is to compile these stories and photographs into a book that not only documents their struggles and triumphs but also fosters a deeper understanding and acceptance of gender diversity globally.

Join us on this journey as we bring to light the vibrant lives and profound stories of third gender communities around the world. "In One’s Own Light" is more than a project; it is a movement towards a more inclusive and compassionate world.
